Kamala Harris, junior United States senator, is the first African-American, the first Asian-American, and the third female vice presidential running mate on a major party ticket.

She ran for the 2020 Democratic presidential nomination and attracted national attention before ending her campaign on December 3, 2019. She was announced as former vice president Joe Biden's running mate in the 2020 election on August 11, 2020.

Joe Biden won the U.S. presidential election, Saturday Nov. 7, 2020, and Kamala Harris became United States Vice President-elect: first woman to be vice president, first woman of color to be vice president, first woman of South Asian descent, first daughter of immigrants.
