There are three important steps to follow to minimize the amount of materials that end up as trash in landfills:

  • Reduce - Take the time to purchase products that are packaged responsibly with a minimum of waste.
  • Reuse - Find ways to give new life to things that might otherwise end up in the trash. Use the database below to learn how to reuse common household items.
  • Recycle - Whenever possible, purchase products that are made from recycled materials. Sort your recyclables and take them to a local recycling center regularly.

 Recycle City Offline

Once you have saved the .zip file on your computer, you won't need to be connected to the Internet to explore Recycle City. Just a few more steps:

  • Open the folder where you saved the file.
  • Double-click on the file, and follow the program's instructions to expand the file.
  • A list of the unzipped files should appear on the screen. Double click on "index.html" to open the Recycle City Home Page in your Web browser (remember, you don't need to get on the Internet, even if it asks you to connect).
  • Explore the sights! Recycle City should work the same way it does when you're connected to the Internet.

 Recycle City Online

There's lots to do here - people and places to visit and plenty of ways to explore how the city's residents recycle, reduce, and reuse waste.

To get started, just click on any section of Recycle City that you want to tour, or click on the Dumptown Game. You can create your own Recycle City scavenger hunt or go to the Activities area and see other ways you can explore.

When you leave this place, you'll know much more about what you can do to help protect the environment. Have fun!

Sample Goals

Reduce the amount of paper going into the landfill as much as possible, and spend as little money as possible.
Remove as much organic waste from the waste stream as you can.
Set an overall spending limit ($200,000, for example) and find out which combination of programs within your budget achieves the most waste reduction.
How much waste can be removed from the waste stream using programs that have no cost to the city?
What is the optimum combination of programs for the city? (This is a hard one, and it may take up to an hour to try all the programs and determine the cost/benefit of them all.)
