Summit founder Aimee Allison started off the day by listing statistics on how women of color have consistently led as voters and organizers, adding that the time had come for them to be represented in elected office.
Black women are among the demographic groups with the highest rates of turnout at the polls, she said. And while women of color make up 20 percent of the U.S. population, they account for only about 7 percent of members of Congress.
She the People is the leading race, gender, and politics network and initiative that advances our democracy by calling women of color fully into their fierce and loving leadership and collective power. She the People elevates and amplifies the voices and power of women of color in our role in forging an inclusive, multiracial coalition that will transform U.S. democracy. Founded and led by Aimee Allison, President of Democracy in Color, She the People is telling a new national story that rightly narrates women of color as the drivers of a new progressive political and cultural era.
She the People kicks off this national conversation with the She the People Summit on September 20, 2018 in San Francisco, featuring the nation’s most exciting progressive women of color leaders on the ballot, championing movements, and driving winning political strategy.
